Junior Platform Developer
Do you want to help shape Norway's digital power system? Together, we will strengthen the grid companies with future-oriented solutions that contribute to a more efficient and sustainable energy future.
Norway is making rapid progress towards the green shift. To realize this, we need more capacity in our power grid. ElBits was started by the power grid companies in Norway to speed up the digitalization of the industry even more, by creating common digital solutions. Think of BankID, just for the grid companies. We are convinced that smart digital services, greater exchange of data, and collaboration across the industry can make more green energy available to Norway. We have great ambitions for the future, and are now looking to strengthen the team with new colleagues who want to be part of this journey.
Who are we?
We at ElBits are a dynamic team with a lot of energy - and a lot we want to accomplish. We are driven by making the world a little better every day, and believe that digital solutions can help find and solve many of the challenges in today's power grid. We are constantly challenging, testing, and developing the way we do things. At the same time, we focus on building a solid foundation at the bottom, which can be further developed as we grow. ElBits is a start-up, but is owned and financed by the Norwegian grid companies.
For ElBits to be successful, we need to become experts at inventing the right digital products. This means both iterative development, as well as being able to offer good developer experiences internally. And this is where we hope that you can help!
The team you'll be working in will create best-in-class developer experiences, and build an in-house developer platform that empowers other teams to work quickly, autonomously, and securely. It is crucial for ElBits to be able to build products for an industry with strict requirements for information security and reliability, and to make it possible to put code into production multiple times every day. The teams at ElBits consist of both in-house developers, as well as ones with backgrounds from several grid companies in Norway today. We are all focusing on creating solutions that do not place strong restrictions on language, frameworks, or methods the teams can use. Here's your chance to learn as we build a necessary, capable platform in an exciting domain!
What will you do?
As a Platform Developer at ElBits, you will have a unique opportunity to develop your skills in platform development. Here, your tasks will vary between assisting where the team and developers in the organization need assistance, as well as taking part in the discussions where we figure out how to solve challenges that may arise. We are a small company that helps each other solve small and large challenges. You, and the rest of the team, are the first line of support for both developer tools and technical challenges that we and our colleagues have. We offer an environment filled with learning and exposure, and we are looking for you who are self-driven, curious, and willing to learn.
A typical day-to-day might look like this:
- Handle basic support requests and assist with problem resolution for internal platform-related challenges.
- Write and maintain code in one or more languages, with a focus on value creation and good practices in maintenance and scalability. (The team currently uses Go, TypeScript, and Pulumi).
- Work with experienced developers to plan, build, and operate platform solutions.
- Participate in the development of useful developer tools that ensure good workflows and efficiency, and that guide users to good and secure architecture.
- Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of solutions in the cloud, as well as assist in tasks related to cloud-based services and Infrastructure as Code in e.g. Azure.
- Be flexible in assisting on different tasks as needed, whether it is related to data management, support or development.
Who are you?
We are looking for you who actively want to seek more knowledge and develop within backend, platform and/or cloud technology. Therefore, we encourage everyone to apply if you want to assist with what is needed, but also be able to change focus quickly in a fast-paced environment. You will have the opportunity to work closely with skilled developers, as well as be a crucial part of helping us achieve our goals.
We are looking for the following:
- Hands-on experience from a relevant internship and/or 1-2 years of experience in development.
- Ability to write code in at least one programming language, and interest in learning new ones.
- Motivation to learn and grow in platform development, as well as interest in becoming a platform or cloud developer.
- Ability to be self-driven, curious and with a desire to contribute where needed in the team.
- The desire to be yourself at work. We want this to be a workplace where people feel safe and accepted for who they are.
- Common sense, and a nose for when "I've never done that before, so I'm sure I'll do it" is a good idea, and when it's not.
We quickly end up doing a lot of different things, and it is the sum of what we know in the team that is important. We don't expect you to know everything!
Here are examples of things that can be a bonus if you have:
- Relevant higher education.
- Knowledge of one of the cloud services (Azure, AWS or GCP) and used IaC tools such as Terraform or Pulumi against one of these providers.
- Heard of systemd or a BSD jail.
- Heard of trunk-based development or a patch.
- Knowledge of Kubernetes or Nomad, or written a Dockerfile.
- Used Bash, fish, ZSH, or PowerShell to resolve an issue.
- Made something happen with GitHub Actions.
- Troubleshoot a Windows machine that won't boot.
- And given up in time.
- Got something to run on Fly.io, Heroku, Netlify, DigitalOcean or Cloud Run.
Our developers make some of the most important decisions for the company and our products, and are ambassadors for ElBits to the technical resources of the utilities we work with. We are looking for people who enjoy learning, sharing, and working with other developers to solve new and interesting problems. We are in a start-up phase, and you will therefore have a unique opportunity to influence which technologies we use and the way we work.
What can we offer?
You'll have the opportunity to develop your skills and learn about platform development with hyperscalers. We will build an internal developer platform with Kubernetes as an engine, where you will work closely with highly competent colleagues. You will get the opportunity to be challenged, as well as be able to challenge us back. If you thrive in a changing environment and want to create new processes and ways of working - this is the place for you!
We also offer:
- Positive, flexible and trust-based working environment.
- To be part of an innovative start-up that has the financial security of the public sector.
- A role that has a major societal impact and helps make a difference in the energy sector.
- Good pension and insurance schemes through Gjensidige.
- Modern office centrally located at the Mesh National Theater in central Oslo.
- Selection of equipment and other necessary tools to ensure you have everything you need to perform your role effectively.
- Nice colleagues and social events.
What does the process look like?
- Submit your CV and contact information.
- If we find your profile interesting, we will schedule a short (30-minute) call with our recruitment advisor.
- After that, we will set up a 1-hour "Meet & Greet" with Staff Engineer for the team, Marcus.
- For the second interview, we would like to ask you to meet Marcus again with one of our developers for a technical discussion, as well as being able to tell you more about the team, day-to-day and technology stack.
- We will then do a couple of reference checks and send you a quote!
