Lead Platform Engineer
Are you ready to help us on our mission toward a greener, more data-driven future? At ElBits we aim for digital innovation that meets sustainability in a friendly, well-funded joint venture.
ElBits is an ambitious collaboration among Norway’s grid companies aimed at driving change in the power grid industry. We achieve this by integrating and standardizing data and developing digital products. Our goal is to create a digital infrastructure that the industry will increase grid capacity and efficiency, as well as streamline and improve customer experiences.
With our partnerships, deep industry expertise, and access to critical data, we are uniquely positioned to innovate and address the challenges of today’s energy systems. By making data accessible and enabling collaboration, we unlock the grid industry's potential. Together, we contribute to solving one of the greatest challenges of our time – the energy transition.
At Elbits, we are building services that depend on stability, scalability, and fast iteration, and this is where our platform team plays a key role. We want to build a platform as we go - not spend two years in isolation, building out capacity and support that we will never need.
Our build-as-you-go platform ensures that our product teams have what they need to develop, launch, and operate our services safely and efficiently. This includes everything from designing and running our cloud platform in Azure, to improving developer environments, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure.
We’ve already launched two products with strict uptime requirements, and more are on the way. We're now hiring a Lead Platform Engineer who can take an active, hands-on role in shaping our platform landscape, build a bridge between our products, and bring capabilities to support ElBits’ journey moving forward. You will have a challenge to sink your teeth into - balancing being agile and just in time with our delivery, but also having a cross-product perspective to ensure we build a scalable architecture for the future.
This role will be a key advisor to the Head of Technology and the Data Team, helping shape and implement our technical strategy across product and enabling teams to ensure we build the right way and the teams get the support they need.
Responsibilities
As Lead Platform Engineer, you'll take ownership of this team's direction and objectives, ensuring alignment across the tech organization. You’ll engage closely with internal customers - the product and data teams - to create shared value, coordinate priorities, and foster a service-minded, collaborative approach.
Some examples of what you'll be responsible for:
- Having a key technical leadership role in guiding and supporting our platform team of three engineers, and shaping the platform’s technical direction in close collaboration with the data team and the Head of Technology, without line management responsibilities.
- Helping define and implement our technical strategy, owning the 'Why' behind platform decisions to ensure they align with our product priorities and business goals.
- Shaping and continuously improving our cloud platform, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure, and developer tooling to enable secure, scalable systems and efficient product development.
- Thinking security-first and taking clear responsibility for platform and infrastructure security across environments and tooling.
- Improving reliability and observability, particularly as more services go live with uptime-critical requirements.
- Collaborating with the product teams to understand their needs and translate them into scalable infrastructure solutions.
- Representing the platform perspective in architectural discussions, helping ensure decisions align with long-term goals.
- Engaging directly with internal and external stakeholders, including grid companies and product teams, to ensure platform choices are grounded in real needs.
- Keep a thoughtful balance between operational autonomy and adherence to corporate governance and regulatory frameworks.
What makes you a great fit?
You’re a seasoned Platform Engineer with experience in driving change and collaborating across a growing tech organization. You know how to scale systems and infrastructure, and you care just as much about the people who use them. You enjoy combining technical depth with leadership and thrive in environments where things are still being defined.
We believe you have:
- A customer-first mindset – whether you're speaking with a grid company, a product manager, or a developer trying to launch something.
- A strong drive to understand and articulate how technical decisions support business objectives by asking the “whys”, aligning your choices with the strategy, and collaborating closely with product teams to deliver the best possible outcomes.
- Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure as code (IaC), implementing security principles, and developer tooling.
- Extensive experience in distributed platform development and cloud engineering, being hands-on across multiple languages, and having a practical mindset in selecting the right tool for each task.
- A track record of building and maintaining robust, scalable, and observable systems.
- Experience in influencing and executing a technical strategy across teams and systems.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain trade-offs clearly.
- A DevOps mindset with a strong focus on security and scalability, and experience building tooling for multiple teams.
While not a requirement, it is an advantage if:
- You have worked in or with startups or scaleups, being comfortable making trade-offs and building iteratively.
- You have experience with multiple cloud environments, languages, frameworks, and varied infrastructure setups to make pragmatic and best scalable decisions.
- Have worked on services that tie systems together, ranging from non-compiled languages like Python and Bash, to more performance-oriented ones like Rust and Go.
We run our services on Azure with Kubernetes, and IaC using Pulumi. Our backend is primarily written in Go and C#, while JavaScript is used where needed for supporting tools or integrations. We are open to experimenting with new tools as we grow.
What can we offer?
First, we want to emphasize the opportunity to pursue new challenges and uncharted territories. This role will help us build a robust and cross-functional platform environment and you'll have the opportunity to work with truly amazing and competent colleagues, making a real impact in Norway's grid sector.
We also offer:
- A positive, flexible, and trust-based work environment.
- To have your work have a great social impact and make a difference in the energy sector.
- Great pension and insurance policies.
- Modern office centrally located at Rådhusgata in Oslo, one of Europe’s fastest-growing cities.
